Q. I remember the old Green Door property was rezoned for a small horse riding facility several months ago. What happened to this project? I haven’t seen any horses or riders on the property.
A. Summerfield Interim Town Planner Carrie Spencer confirms the property on Oak Ridge Road was rezoned on Jan. 11. From the town’s standpoint the facility can move forward, although staff approval will be needed before building begins on a proposed additional barn and riding arena.
The small, “boutique” riding facility will be opened by Cash Lovell Stables of Winston-Salem. “We’re trying to finalize the last details and working on contract details,” says Parker Lovell. “Hopefully we’ll be ready to move forward early next year.”
About two acres of property that include the Quonset hut building and house next door were rezoned. The hut was built after WWII as a skating rink called the Green Door. The wrought-iron fence and gate are believed to have been at the U.S. Embassy in Egypt until Egypt’s war with Israel in 1976.
