Northwest Guilford raced to a big first quarter lead en route to a win against Grimsley in the Timco Invitational at the Greensboro Coliseum.
The matchup in the consolation round went to the Vikings by a 68-62 count due to a furious comeback attempt by the Whirlies.
Northwest (9-3) staked itself a 20-7 lead through the first eight minutes of play. Grimsley chipped four points off of the deficit by halftime and continued to close the gap, but the Vikings held on for the win.
Nick Powell led Northwest with 17 points, while Cody Hylton and Colson Everett scored 12 points each for the Vikings. Hampton Billips and Josh Beitz controlled the backboards for the Vikings as the hauled in 12 and eight rebounds respectively.
In the opening round matchup in the tournament, Ragsdale topped the Vikings 63-58 thanks to a first half in which the Tigers opened with four consecutive 3-pointers.
