The PTSA's Health & Safety Committee at Northern Guilford Middle School is encouraging students to take a stand against bullying.

"Be the One" is the tagline for the PTSA's campaign, and students are encouraged to finish the sentence any way that works - "Be the one to change," "Be the one to make a difference," etc.

The campaign kicks off on Monday, Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. with a special presentation by the Guilford County Sheriff's Department on Internet safety for students, parents, teachers and staff.

The second part of the campaign will be a school-wide reading of The One Book- One School-One Community anti-bullying book called "Ghost of Spirit Bear." After students have read the book, it will then be discussed in the classroom.

Parents will also be encouraged to read the book and discuss it with other parents in special book club meetings as well as with their children.

The third portion of the anti-bullying campaign will be held Thursday, Nov. 8 with five separate presentations by guest speaker Keith Deltano, which will include student assemblies, an afterschool teacher workshop and an evening parent/community presentation that incorporates discussion of "Ghost of Spirit Bear."
