The Rock Gym at Summerfield Elementary School is officially a national historic landmark.
At the Sept. 11 meeting of Summerfield Town Council, Town Manager Scott Whitaker announced the news.
"As of August 28, it was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. That's pretty exciting for Summerfield," Whitaker said to uproarious applause.
The Rock Gym will soon be renovated. A new roof, new windows and doors and interior and exterior paint are among the improvements planned. According to Summerfield Elementary School Principal Jill Walsh, all renovations are subject to strict guidelines because the gym is on the National Historic Register. Walsh expects renovations to be completed by February.
